After a new formulation is established and characterized, the product or formulation is taken through or exposed to near to actual life situations. The idea of simulation studies is to mimic the real-life conditions in vitro. The data obtained is useful for scientists or R&D formulation staff for doing necessary changes, improvements or enhancements in the products. In addition to this, such simulation studies are a confidence building exercise about the product efficacy and form a part of Standardization data.
One example of Simulation study is of finding the effect on a probiotic formulation when gut conditions are simulated at acidic and bile salts in stomach and alkaline pH of intestine along with gentle movement and time factoring. Assessment of probiotic viability of different groups in the formulation, enumeration of various genuses, and their survival ability at different stages of simulation with time factor are studied and reported.
Another example to cite is simulation studies on catheters by exposing the catheters to artificial urine at different temperatures, agitation and varying the contact time. After simulating the real life conditions for a specified duration the antimicrobial activity is tested by suitable ASTM or equivalent method. The microbial count between the initial and different time intervals is compared so as to find the effect of urine contact with respect to reduced antimicrobial activity if any.
